New Geographies
New Geographies was a three-year project, funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, to create a new map of the East of England based on personal thoughts, reflections and stories of unexplored or overlooked places, rather than on historic or economical centres.
Throughout the Summer of 2017, people were asked to nominate overlooked or unexpected places in the region that they find meaningful and interesting to them. With over 270 public nominations of overlooked places, New Geographies created a new map of the East of England made by those who live there.
In response to these nominations, ECVAN commissioned artists – from the UK and internationally – to highlight some of those places with new site-specific work. This combination of local knowledge and world-class art sought to create a new vision of the East of England as a place to encounter excellent art in unexpected places.
The artists selected were: Maria Anastassiou, David Blandy, Marcus Coates & Leah Millar, Cooking Sections, Ian Giles, Krijn de Koning, susan pui san lok, Heather and Ivan Morison, Stuart Whipps and Laura Wilson.
